Theatre Internship in Stage Managementhorizontal rule

As an SCR Intern in Stage Management, you will be intensely involved in the process of individual productions. The Stage Management Staff consists of two Resident Stage Managers, 2-3 additional full-time Stage Managers/Assistant Stage Managers, 2-3 Production Assistants, and the Stage Management Interns. There is always one Stage Manager, one Assistant Stage Manager or PA, and one Intern assigned to each production. Here are examples of areas in which you would be involved:

The Rehearsal Process:
As a member of the Stage Management Team, you will be asked to attend production meetings; be in rehearsals and assist the Stage Manager and the Assistant Stage Manager in preparing for the rehearsal day; the tracking and running of rehearsal props and costumes, etc.; as well as assisting the actors with lines (cueing and line notes).

During the Tech process and Run of the Show:
The Intern is not only part of the stage management staff, but also considered one of the running crew for each show. You may be called upon to perform such duties as: running props, shifting scenery, followspot operator, or additional dresser as well as assisting the Stage Manager and the Assistant Stage Manager in maintaining the integrity of the show.

The Internship is open to all qualified applicants. We ask that you have some previous background in stage managing—undergraduate education or community, waiver, repertory, or stock theatre. Graduate students are especially encouraged. We do offer a small stipend or class credit. The workweek is six days a week, generally Tuesday through Sunday. Hours may range from as few as 40 to as many as 70 (during the tech and preview weeks). Internships are available for the full season or as short as one production depending on our assignment needs and your availability. Our season runs from the beginning of August through the end of June. Depending on your availability and length of the internship; you may have the opportunity to work in both L.O.R.T. houses (B and C), under L.O.R.T. and/or T.Y.A. contracts, on new or classical plays, and under the various Stage Management Teams.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide housing, however in the past interns have been able to find and share affordable housing within a 20 mile radius (having a motor vehicle is practically a necessity in Southern California), and occasionally other SCR staff members may have a room to rent.

Many interns have taken their experience and have continued to work either at SCR as Production Assistants or Assistant Stage Managers or at other entertainment venues such as: theme parks and cruise lines, Las Vegas, graduate school, summer/conservatory theatre, or have gone into related fields like Direction and Production Management.

Interested applicants are asked to send cover letter, application (pdf file), resume, and two letters of recommendation to:
