SCR Players II, Teen Version
Gold in the Bones, presented by the Junior Players, was the first production of the SCR Players 2008-09 “season.” The young ensemble, directed by Mercy Vasquez, amazed audiences with the scope of their talent as they skillfully dealt with the universal theme of greed in a large production that included pirates, ghosts, grave yards and gold.
Now it’s the Teen Players turn, and once again, Theatre Conservatory Director Hisa Takakuwa has chosen a challenging play, this time one that was written for adult actors; in fact, Charles Dickens’ Hard Times was produced to great acclaim in South Coast Repertory’s 1989-90 Season. Takakuwa has condensed the script to 90 minutes and believes her actors are up to the task.
Takakuwa has another reason for choosing the play. “Our Teen Players
ensemble group has gotten this far through talent, hard work and
dedication,” she said. “Along the way, most of them auditioned for and
were cast in SCR’s annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas
Carol. Before they graduate from high school and from our program, I
wanted them to have the experience of working in another Dickens play
as a cap to their training.”
After weeks of hard work, the 15-member Teen ensemble is ready to bring you Hard Times May 23-31.

Facts. Facts. Facts. That’s what school is all about in Coketown in the 1840s. Hard times. That’s what life is all about. But according to Sleary, the lisping circus manager, “People must be amuthed” — that is, amused. SCR’s Teen Players will amuse audiences as well as move them with their portrayals of colorful Dickens characters, from the bombastic merchant who believes he’s right just because he’s rich to the misguided school proprietor who discovers there is wisdom of the heart as well as the head. Rich and poor, the villainous and the good-hearted, you’ll meet them all in Hard Times.
Teen Players: Chase Anderson-Shaw, Brianna Beach, Ellis Beardsley, Jordan Bellow, Lauren Gardner, Valentina Gehley, Courtney Kato, Becky King, Julia Ostmann, Steve Quinn, Julian Sharifi, Akshay Sharma, Lauren Speakman, Rachel Teague, Sanaz Toossi.
