Huangs Underwrite Putting It Together — Number 4!

SCR Trustee S.L. and Betty Huang are making their fourth bow as Segerstrom Stage Honorary Producers. Previously they helped to underwrite Hamlet (2007), Lovers and Executioners (2003) and Tom Walker (2001). The Huangs are passionate SCR theatre-goers, subscribing to First Nights on both stages.  They have generously supported SCR through the “Act Now for SCR Challenge,” Legacy and Next Stage campaigns and are longtime Gala underwriters (Betty chaired the hugely successful 2007 Gala, Affair in Shanghai). They are members of the Platinum Circle. S.L. currently serves as a member of the SCR Board of Trustees, and Betty was elected an Emeritus Trustee at the July 22, 2009 Annual Meeting.

SCR Trustee Mary Beth Adderley generously steps into the Honorary Producer circle for a fifth time (previous shows included A Feminine Ending, 2008; Nothing Sacred, 2006; The Caucasian Chalk Circle, 2005; and Terra Nova, 2004) as the Honorary Producer of The Happy Ones on the Argyros Stage.  Last season, Mary Beth served as an Honorary Producer of the 2009 Pacific Playwrights Festival. A major donor to  the Next Stage campaigns, she is also a major Gala underwriter, a First Night subscriber to both stages and a member of the Platinum Circle.

Haskell & White Honorary Corporate Producer of Putting It Together — Number 11!

Haskell & White LLP has now underwritten 11 SCR productions — from A Christmas Carol in 2001 to this season's opener, Putting it Together, placing them among the theatre’s most dedicated corporate patrons.  With offices in Irvine and San Diego, Haskell & White LLP is a leading provider of assurance, tax and consulting services to middle-market private and public companies.  The firm is one of Orange County’s largest local accounting and consulting firms, and its culture promotes supporting the nonprofit community.

Gala Brings Blue Skies

Nothing But Blue Skies is the title of SCR’s 2009 Gala Ball, and the  name is a powerful affirmation of the theatre’s position — now and in the future — as a leading arts institution for Orange County and the country. The annual black-tie party, taking place at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort on September 12, is SCR’s single largest fundraising event and provides the largest gift to the Annual Fund. The monies from the Gala Ball support critical programs throughout the theatre. For the past seven months, Gala Chair Bette Aitken and her dedicated committee of 44 community volunteers worked hard to plan — and sell out — a sensational event with theatrical entertainment that will amaze and delight party-goers.

Gala Chair Bette Aitken thanks her Committee co-chairs and the Gala underwriters who were honored a month before the big event at the annual Patron Party hosted by Steve and Toni Berlinger.

Nothing But Blue Skies will evoke a spirit of optimism intended to inspire all of SCR’s friends and family through this current challenging economic environment. More than 340 guests will enjoy dinner, dancing and special entertainment. They will begin the evening with cocktails in the Coconut Grove, and then follow a swirl of ballroom dancers into the Grand Ballroom. After dinner, they'll dance the night away, knowing that SCR’s fantastic 46th season is underway.

Challenge Raises $340,000

An Italian Straw Hat

Generous contributions to the ‘Act Now for SCR Challenge’ helped guarantee the high quality of productions such as An Italian Straw Hat that theatre-goers have always expected.

Everyone at South Coast Repertory extends a hearty “Thank you!” to the 821 donors who made new or increased gifts for the “Act Now for SCR Challenge” campaign, which ended June 30. We are delighted to report that we exceeded our goal of $160,000. Combined with the matching leadership gifts from five Trustees, the Act Now for SCR Challenge generated $340,000 for last season’s Annual Fund.

The Challenge played a significant part in keeping SCR on track fiscally during the depths of the recession. It offset the loss of income from SCR’s endowment, and helped us weather drop-offs in gifts, especially from corporations. SCR prides itself on its fiscal responsibility, and it was gratifying to end the 2008-2009 season in the black, particularly during difficult economic times.

We are extremely grateful to all of our donors! Thank you again for your loyalty and dedication to great theatre.

SCR Welcomes Four New Trustees

SCR’s Annual Dinner took place on July 22 and the program, “The Collected Stories of SCR,” celebrated not just the 2008-2009 season, but the theatre’s 45-year history. More than 90 supporters dined at tables set up on the Segerstrom Stage. They were regaled by a

sextet of fine hosts led by Founding Artists Hal Landon Jr. and Richard Doyle along with Arye Gross, who last season appeared in Our Mother's Brief Affair; longtime SCR favorite Kandis Chappell; Kandis’ Collected Stories co-star, Melanie Lora; and  former SCR company member and current Trustee Mary Beth Adderley.

The season’s honorary producers were recognized and warmly thanked; many urged their dinner compatriots to take the plunge and underwrite a play for the 46th season. Wylie Aitken, president of the Board of Trustees, introduced four new Trustees: Susan H. Bowman, Emulex Corporation Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Facilities; Brian K. Drake, Audit Partner, KPMG, LLP, in Irvine; David W. Krajanowski, Managing Partner, SingerLewak, LLP, in Irvine; and Robert E. Palmer, Partner, Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, LLP, in Irvine. Betty Huang was elected an Emeritus Trustee, and Julianne Argyros and past Board President Tim Weiss were elected Honorary Trustees. Retiring Trustees Pat Hancock and Dean Samsvick were applauded for their nine years of service on the Board.
