SCR Offers Summer Acting Classes for Kids & Teens
COSTA MESA, CA., June 29, 2010 – South Coast Repertory’s popular summer acting programs for kids and teens include Summer Acting Workshop for grades 3-12 and Summer Musical Theatre for grades 7-12.
Summer Acting Workshop is a two-week introduction to theatre for newcomers, with a choice of two sessions (July 26–August 7 or August 9-21). Students in this fun-filled theatre “camp” discover the joy of acting as they build self-esteem and confidence and make new friends.
So that they will be able to interact with their peers, classes are divided into Kids (grades 3-4 and 5-6), Jr. Teens (grades 7-8) and Teens (grades 9-12). Students choose from classes held 9 a.m. – noon or 1 – 4 p.m. At the end of each session, they learn first-hand the importance of working together, as all students perform on one of SCR’s three stages before an invited audience of family and friends.
According to Theatre Conservatory Director Hisa Takakuwa, “In our program, young people looking for new experiences will have the freedom to unlock their creative imaginations, learn about theatre—and have a great time. With two sessions to choose from, families can make end-of-the-summer travel plans and still have time for the Summer Acting Workshop before school starts.”
A faculty of professional instructors leads students through a fun-filled exploration of voice, movement, creative play-making and character development. Tuition for the two-week session is $310 ($30 discount for each additional sibling).
Summer Acting Workshop graduates have an opportunity to sign up for the year-round Theatre Conservatory’s Kids and Teen Acting Classes beginning September 14. After one year of training, they may audition for roles in the annual production of A Christmas Carol, and after two years, they are eligible to try out for the Players performance group, which presents two weekends of spring shows in the Nicholas Studio.
Summer Musical Theatre (August 9-21, 1-4 p.m.) is open to students in grades 7-12. Regardless of experience, everyone is welcome—from beginners to young pros, with classes divided into into peer groups (grades 7-9 and 9-12). This exciting and lively class teaches students how to audition for a musical role and then prepares them to perform that role. They’ll enjoy the vocal work, while learning to interpret the music and the text. In other words, according to instructor Erin McNally, students will learn what it means to “act” a song and “sing” a scene. Throughout, emphasis will be on healthy use of the voice.
All classes are held in state-of-the-art air-conditioned classrooms. The sessions fill up quickly and immediate enrollment is suggested. Enrollment in Summer Acting Workshop is available online at www.scr.org or by phone at (714) 708-5577. Enrollment in Summer Musical Theatre is available by phone only at (714) 708-5577.
