The Trip to Bountiful Opens on SCR's Segerstrom Stage; Underwritten by Mary Beth Adderley, Elizabeth and Ryan Williams, with Corporate Underwriting by Haskell & White LLP
COSTA MESA, CA. (October 28, 2011) – Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful opened tonight on the Segerstrom Stage, with underwriting by Honorary Producers Mary Beth Adderley and Elizabeth and Ryan Williams, and Corporate Honorary Producer Haskell & White LLP.
The classic America play about an elderly but still feisty widow, who wants nothing more than to return to her childhood home, is directed by SCR Founding Artistic Director Martin Benson, a long-time admirer of Foote, with whom he became close friends in the later years of the playwright’s life.
In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson spoke of that unique relationship, which developed when Foote and Benson worked together on SCR’s world premiere of Getting Frankie Married—and Afterwards and later on the West Coast Premiere of The Carpetbagger’s Children. Masterson thanked the underwriters for enabling the theatre to pull out all the stops in producing The Trip to Bountiful, with its large cast and numerous set changes.
Managing Director Paula Tomei thanked the play’s Media Partner Coast magazine (represented by Monica Hernandez, director of operations) and Segerstrom Stage Media Partner PBS SoCal (represented by Maria Hall-Brown, producer and on-air personality) and invited everyone to the Cast Party after the show at The Center Club.
The Trip to Bountiful is the seventh play underwritten by Mary Beth Adderley, and for the last three she has been joined by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Ryan Williams. Adderley, an avid theatre-goer (and former member of SCR’s acting company), supports the theatre through major donations to fund-raising events and campaigns. An advocate of new plays, she helped underwrite the 2009 Pacific Playwrights Festival.
