INDIAN SUMMER By Richard Hellesen Music and Lyrics by Michael Silversher Directed by John-David Keller Touring January 21 - April 4, 2009
South Coast Repertory explores an important time in California history with the revival of a tale that captured the imaginations of school children and educators and became one of the most popular Educational Touring Productions.
Based on the true story of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield, who spent his formative years with the Choinumne (chu-wan’na-me) tribe, Indian Summer illuminates the relationship between early settlers and Native Americans while providing a direct link to elementary school curriculum
As Tom is introduced to people different from himself, young audiences will learn along with him. Like Tom, they’ll come to appreciate the relationship between people and the land that nourishes them, to understand traditional beliefs and values and to share in the wonders of nature. This bright and lively musical highlights an important time in California history as it teaches a valuable lesson in ethnic diversity.
Indian Summer directly supports California K-6 State Frameworks for History-Social Science, English-Language Arts and Visual and Performing Arts.
