The cheering began on opening night of its world premiere at SCR. It never stopped. From New York to theatres across America, from London’s West End to a star-studded Broadway revival, audiences knew they were seeing something special. A newly discovered journal, filled with enigmatic entries, recalls Greenwich Village in the early 1960s when two young architects, unaware they’re on the brink of fame, struggle with plans for an important commission. But it’s left to their children, thirty years later, to sort out the mystery behind their lives—and loves. With this SCR production, the journey comes full circle.

Playwright Bio
Richard Greenberg is SCR’s most-commissioned playwright, at 11—nine of which have been produced here. They are The Violet Hour, Everett Beekin, Hurrah at Last, Three Days of Rain (Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award; Pulitzer Prize finalist; Olivier, Drama Desk and Hull-Warriner nominations), Night and Her Stars, A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, The Extra Man, The Injured Party and Our Mother’s Brief Affair. The native New Yorker graduated from Princeton University and did graduate work at Harvard before entering Yale’s MFA playwriting program. His play Take Me Out won the Tony Award in 2003 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He was most recently represented on Broadway by The American Plan and the revival of Pal Joey, for which he wrote a new book. Other plays include The Dazzle, The House in Town, Life Under Water and The Author’s Voice. He is a winner of the Oppenheimer Award and the first winner of the PEN/Laura Pels Award for a playwright in mid-career.
