Father Flynn, an amiable young priest, is adored by his students; Sister Aloysius, an unbending principal, is pleased by the fear she invokes in them. When her spies report an incident between Father Flynn and a student, his explanation seems reasonable but doesn’t end her probing. As their cat-and-mouse game continues, the play takes on elements of a detective story, exploring issues with detailed clarity even as it keeps audiences guessing right up to the end.
Playwright:
John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt won four Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His other plays include Defiance, Four Dogs and a Bone, Dirty Story, Cellini, Psychopathia Sexualis and Savage in Limbo. Recommendation and Resources:
Some theatre-goers may be uncomfortable because the subject matter is religious—and possibly controversial; however, it will be intriguing for mature high schoolers and above and everyone interested in exploring issues and dissecting mysteries.
