When it comes to South Coast Repertory, supporters are already stagestruck, so preparing for the upcoming “Stagestruck!” Gala is second nature to them. Not to mention, this is their 38th annual outing!

“Some of us have been here from the beginning,” Olivia Johnson said. “And others go back many seasons, so we know how to put on a show! Plus, as always, we’re joined by new members who will add a fresh perspective.”

This year’s show kicked off on August 18th with the Gala Patron Party, thrown by Bette and Wylie Aitken at their Newport Beach home. And talk about stagestruck:  Bette is up there with the best of them, having hosted three Patron Parties with Wylie, chaired two Galas, and co-chaired the 50th Season Gala.

Managing Director Paula Tomei, Gala Executive Chair Sally Anderson and Artistic Director Marc Masterson spoke briefly to the gathering, thanked the Aitkens for their ongoing support and applauded the Gala Committee and generous underwriters.

Then, as the sun set over the Pacific, it was time for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and conversation about the upcoming Gala, which promises to be the most theatrical of all. SCR Theatre Conservatory graduate and Broadway star Nicole Parker will entertain the guests in the ballroom, surrounded by giant screens featuring SCR production photos. Partygoers will be encouraged to take selfies at vignettes of memorable SCR shows (beautifully crafted and costumed by world-renowned designers and artisans), post them on social media, and then watch them appear on the screens.

According to Sally, who joined the SCR Board last season, “Being a trustee was the perfect segue into leading the Gala, because of the camaraderie within both groups. I enjoy working with all of the people associated with our theatre because they’re so much fun!
