Party Play – "Curve of Departure"

From the opening scene, Curve of Departure grabbed hold of the First Night audience's attention and never let up, delivering an emotional evening of powerful drama and moving performances.

The First Night audience’s reaction to Curve of Departure was overwhelmingly positive, and it was obvious that the audience was deeply touched by the emotional story. Along with generous laughter—and some tears—theatergoers showed their appreciation with enthusiastic applause and an immediate standing ovation. Overall, the buzz was very favorable surrounding both the play and the performances of the talented cast:  Christian Barillas, Allan Miller, Larry Powell and Kim Staunton. Several donors mentioned that they were moved to tears during the play, especially during the final scene. 

"I felt like a family member in the hotel room," says donor Linda Lathrop. "As the secrets were relvealed, I was pulled into the drama."

Guests who attended the cast party, co-sponsored by Seasons 52 at South Coast Plaza, were greeted with the flavors of fall in a casually sophisticated setting. The seasonally inspired menu highlighted an array of autumn appetizer selections, including a variety of flatbreads and hors d’oeuvres. Among the savory signature flatbread options were roasted roma tomato, garlic pesto chicken, and lobster and fresh mozzarella.

Butler-passed hors d’oeuvres consisted of delicious fare such as ahi tuna tartare, braised beef short ribs with cheddar grits, chicken yakitori skewers, wood-grilled meatballs, butternut squash soup, spinach-stuffed cremini mushroom caps, Kona-crusted “lollipop” lamb chops, and much more. To accompany the seasonal menu items, Seasons 52’s mixologists concocted various artisanal cocktails for the guests.

Additionally, a stunning seafood table display tempted partygoers with mouthwatering options such as Maryland-style crab cakes, prosciutto-wrapped sea scallops, chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail, and lemongrass and curry mussels.

For a sweet finish to the lovely soiree, guests were treated to Seasons 52’s Mini Indulgence Celebration Towers. With assorted flavors including Key Lime Pie, Belgian Chocolate S’more, Mocha Macchiato, Chocolate Peanut Butter Torte, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie and Carrot Cake, there was a decadent mini dessert guaranteed to please every palate.

First Night theatregoers were delighted to have the opportunity to meet playwright Rachel Bonds, director Mike Donahue and the entire cast during the party. All the while, lively conversation and laughter continued to swirl around Bonds’ new play Curve of Departure, a warm and surprisingly funny drama about what it means to be a family.
