Party Play: "Sugar Plum Fairy"

From the opening scene, Sandra Tsing Loh’s Sugar Plum Fairy captivated the First Night audience’s attention as they relived Loh’s most cherished childhood desire—to land a highly coveted role in the Beverly Rosann School of Dance’s production of The Nutcracker. With Loh’s trademark wit, this hilarious tale of life’s crushing blows received generous laughter and left the audience aglow with the holiday spirit.

The Slutzky Family, Honorary Producers of Sugar Plum Fairy, was in attendance on First Night, including SCR Board President Alan Slutzky, his wife Olivia and parents Joel and Judy. “We all had a terrific time on Friday,” said Alan. “Sandra is an amazingly funny storyteller, though I never tried out for The Nutcracker, I could relate to her recollections of having the perfect older sister! She handled all that’s mixed-up with the holidays—hope, joy and sometimes disappointment—in a hilarious and poignant way.”

Guests who attended the cast party, co-sponsored by the Silver Trumpet Restaurant & Bar at the Avenue of the Arts Hotel, were welcomed to a Sugar Plum Fairy wonderland, complete with magical snowscapes, twinkling lights and other holiday trimmings. With colorful hues of pink, green, purple and blue, the fanciful décor consisted of “tutu” centerpieces, glittery nutcrackers, snowflake-decorated candleholders, exquisite ornaments and tabletop Christmas trees, along with other Sugar Plum Fairy-inspired holiday pieces.

Among the menu highlights were various food stations serving Monte Cristo sandwiches sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with cranberry chutney relish, house-made chili topped with Fritos, fried chicken tender skewers with sweet hot mustard dipping sauce and maple chipotle aioli, and shrimp bisque shots.

The festive crowd also enjoyed a selection of delectable appetizers including mini crab cakes with mango papaya salsa, mini asparagus Gruyere quiche and goat cheese-stuffed and bacon-wrapped dates.

For a sweet finish, partygoers indulged in a selection of scrumptious, seasonal desserts such as mini-pecan tartlets, pumpkin cheesecake bites, mini-chocolate peppermint cupcakes, colorful holiday sugar cookies and Gingerbread men cookies.

The evening’s signature cocktail was a “Sugar Plum Fairy Martini”—a Pink Martini made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka (and a Pink Sugar Rim!), a perfect libation for a play that revolves around one’s former preteen ballerina dreams.

First Night guests greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast members at the Silver Trumpet Restaurant & Bar’s elegant setting. All the while, lively conversation, laughter and holiday merriment continued to swirl around Sugar Plum Fairy, a fun, engaging story that reminds us there is always joy to be found during the holiday season. All in attendance at Sugar Plum Fairy’s First Night agreed—it was a sparkling soiree, indeed!
