Christopher Durang’s Tony Award-winning comedy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, launched the 2018-19 season on the Julianne Argyros Stage, and theatregoers showed their appreciation for the hilarious dialogue and quirky, amusing characters with generous applause, warm laughter and an immediate standing ovation.
Led by Bart DeLorenzo’s direction, the entire ensemble created a memorable evening that transported First Night attendees to Vanya and Sonia’s comfortable country house in Bucks County, Penn. The buzz was humming for the play and the performances of the talented cast: Tim Bagley, Jenna Cole, Svetlana Efremova, Pamela J. Gray, Jose Moreno Brooks and Lorena Martinez.
Honorary Producer and First Nighter Julianne Argyros loved the show and found the play to be highly entertaining. “I enjoyed this play from start to finish!” said Julianne. “The amazing cast brought so much fun and laughter to the audience. I am already planning on seeing it again – Bravo!”
Guests who attended the cast party on Ela’s Terrace were greeted with harvest-themed décor including pumpkins, squash and gorgeous fall-colored leaves in tall vases scattered throughout the inviting space. The beautiful autumn ambience continued with twinkling overhead lights and lanterns.
The celebratory soireé was sponsored by Andrei’s Conscious Cuisine & Cocktails, with a menu highlighting Andrei’s commitment to local and organic ingredients. Partygoers feasted on an array of delectable offerings, including passed hors d’oeuvres like red-wine cherries and brie cheese crostini and yellow corn and Yukon Gold potato chowder with microgreens.
Besides the tasty appetizers, food stations offered an extensive selection of savory fare such as mini cheese kebabs with sharp Tillamook cheddar cheese, drunken goat cheese and spicy honey. A Mediterranean tasting station featuring basil hummus, Castelvetrano olive tapenade, crudité vegetables and pita chips was a big hit with the crowd, as well as California free-range chicken kebabs with Greek yogurt and Mediterranean spices. Beef-steak sandwiches also tempted with thinly sliced, house-roasted beef, Provolone cheese, cheddar and sweet onion jam served on a brioche mini bun.
The evening’s signature cocktail was “Masha’s Black Russian”—a delicious drink comprised of Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Kahlúa.
For a sweet finish to the evening, guests indulged in divine desserts that included mini French apple turnovers and a chocolate truffle cake served with raspberry mousseline—all scrumptious treats that few could resist!
First Night theatregoers were delighted to have the opportunity to meet director Bart DeLorenzo and the entire cast during the party. All the while, lively conversation and laughter continued to swirl around Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a funny and touching play that is also a manifesto for possibility, as the comedy’s main message imparts that it’s never too late for taking second chances.
