Press Release - Fast Company First Night

Fast Company Opens on SCR's Julianne Argyros Stage

COSTA MESA, CA, October 11, 2013 – South Coast Repertory continued its 50th Season celebration tonight with the first of four world premieres on the Julianne Argyros Stage.  Fast Company, by Carla Ching, directed by Bart DeLorenzo, is  a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.  The fast, funny, dark—and dangerous—comedy about a family of grifters kept the First Night audience guessing right up until the end.

In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson said, “I got a big kick out of Carla’s play when I first read it because it was unlike anything I’d ever read.  Those of you who saw the staged reading at our Pacific Playwrights Festival last spring, agreed.  I’m pleased that we’ve been able to bring Fast Company to the Julianne Argyros Stage, in a production that includes unique sound and projection designs that will thrill our audiences.”

Managing Director Paula Tomei joined Masterson onstage to welcome First Nighters, especially the new subscribers, each honored with a white rose for the evening, and to acknowledge SCR Patrons Julia and George Argyros.

Tomei thanked South Coast Plaza, represented by Executive Director of Marketing Debra Gunn Downing, for its support as 50th Season Golden Elite Sponsor—and reminded everyone that South Coast Plaza was hosting the Cast Party, at Jewel Court, after the show.  “Don’t miss this party,” she said.  “because it will be the best ever—and it will include the unveiling of SCR’s Jewel Court installation.”   Tomei added that the installation, tracing 50 years of SCR history, would be available to those visiting South Coast Plaza through October 20.

During their curtain speeches, Masterson and Tomei introduced Philip Sanchez, associate director, philanthropic investments, Time Warner Foundation, which funds SCR’s CrossRoads Commissioning Project through a two-year grant.  The project supports commissions to six playwrights, including Ching, who will create new plays inspired by Orange County’s diversity.

Finally, Masterson and Tomei introduced Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson, who elicited a standing ovation from the audience.  When the co-CEOs shared the news—first announced on September 21st at the 50th Season Gala—that the Folino Theatre Center would be re-named the David Emmes and Martin Benson Theatre Center, the ovation turned into a roar.

After taking their bows, Emmes and Benson welcomed SCR artists long associated with the theatre, who have contributed significantly to the company’s success.  They included Anthony Carillo, Sara Clement, Val Day, Celeste Den, Nike Doukas, Robert Egan, Emily Eiden, Linda Gehringer, Jamison Jones, Michele Krusiec, Ann Marie Lee, Becca Lustgarten, Bill McGuire, Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper, Jenny O’Hara, Georgina E. Okon, Tyler Pierce, Christopher Rivas, Jarrett Sleeper, Barbara Tarbuck, John Vickery, Erika Whalen and Amelia White.   Other longtime friends from the theatre world will join audiences for First Nights throughout the season.

Also acknowledged during the curtain speeches were Media Partners 89.3 KPCC, represented by Collin Mitchell; and “Marty and Mody” from Orange County Jewish Life.  Following the show, First Nighters and guests headed for South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court for the private party, catered (with an Asian flavor) by Crème de la Crème, with décor by White Lilac.

Among the First Nighters and their guests were Wylie & Bette Aitken, Inna & Michael Alterman, George & Julianne Argyros, John & Mary Carrington, Barbara & David Cline, Aaron & Michelle Dishon, Veronica Gray & Robert Daily, Steve & Laurie Duncan, Brian & Diane Drake, Gary & Debera Hendricks, Bob & Mimi Holcombe, Olivia & Andy Johnson, Tim & Marianne Kay, Teri Kennady, John & Sue Murphy, John & Margi Murray, Carl Neisser, Robert Palmer & Nancy Malleo, Alberto & Nancy Manetta, Jean Platt, John & Carolina Prichard, Barbara Roberts, Tom Rogers, Joe & Judy Rosener, Nola Schneer, Marvina & David Shilling, Alan & Olivia Slutzky, Laurie Smits Staude, Tom & Marilyn Sutton, Tom Taylor, Marilyn & Steve Weber, Elaine Weinberg, Bill & Marci Weinberg, Tod & Linda White, Wes & Judy Whitmore, Dean & Estee Zipser
