Press Release - The Light in the Piazza Opens on Segerstrom Stage

The Light in the Piazza Underwritten in part by Honorary Producers Joan and Andy Fimiano & Laurie Smits Staude and Corporate Honorary Producer Haskell & White LLP

COSTA MESA, CA, January 31, 2014.  The Light in the Piazza, lauded as the most glorious musical of the 21st century, opened tonight on South Coast Repertory’s Segerstrom Stage, with underwriting by Joan and Andy Fimiano & Laurie Smits Staude and Corporate Honorary Producer Haskell & White LLP.

After Board President Damien Jordan welcomed playgoers to First Night of the Tony Award-winning musical, he acknowledged the founding artistic directors who were honored recently at a ceremony for the newly-named David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center.

Artistic Director Marc Masterson recognized the evening’s special guests, artists who have collaborated with SCR over the decades and are being honored throughout the 50th Season.

Masterson reminded audiences that The Light in the Piazza’s music and lyrics are by Adam Guettel, grandson of the iconic composer Richard Rogers; and the book is by Associate Artist Craig Lucas, whose career blossomed in the 1980s when SCR produced five of his plays in four years.  Masterson then spoke about the joy of bringing together Dirctor Kent Nicholson, Music Director Dennis Castallano (who has musically directed ten shows for SCR), a brilliant cast and outstanding designers for this incomparable production.

Jordan thanked the Honorary Producers, saying, “We pulled out all of the stops for this show, and we couldn’t have done it without you.”  He urged everyone to read about the underwriters in their programs.  “This is the Fimiano’s second production, Laurie’s sixth and Haskell & White’s fifteenth—so there’s lots to read about!

Managing Director Paula Tomei added her thanks to Segerstrom Stage Media Partner PBS SoCal, represented by Producer/Host Maria Hall-Brown and Rick Reiff, producer and host of “SoCal Insider;” and Media Partner Orange County Business Journal, represented by Publisher Richard Reisman.  She invited everyone to the Cast Party, co-hosted by Ristorante Antonello.
