South Coast Repertory’s  Summer Players present ‘Mary Poppins’ Aug. 8 -9 and 14-16

COSTA MESA, CA. – South Coast Repertory’s Summer Players will present Mary Poppins on the Julianne Argyros Stage August 8-9 and 14-16, directed by Theatre Conservatory Director Hisa Takakuwa, with music direction by Erin McNally.

The stage version of Mary Poppins is based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film about a magical nanny and a carefree chimney sweep, who prove to misbehaving children and their uptight parents that it’s the little things that keep a family together.  The song-filled show features all-time hits like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee.

“Mary Poppins is an ideal choice for our Summer Players,” Takakuwa said.  “The show played on Broadway for six years and toured for another six—and I’ve waited all that time for the performing rights to become available!”

That finally happened last fall. “The timing was perfect,” Takakuwa said.  “Mary Poppins is set in Edwardian London, and this year’s ensemble is filled with experienced young actors who have performed in period plays, including 19 who have portrayed children in A Christmas Carol.  And of those, six also appeared recently in our Teen Players production of  David Copperfield.”

The cast is made up of 32 young actors, with two of them alternating as Bert (the chimney sweep).  “When I cast the show, Christopher Huntley and Guy McEleney were wonderful,” Takakuwa said.  “We’ve never double cast a Players show, but I couldn’t imagine not giving them both the opportunity to play that role.”

The Summer Players ensemble is comprised of students in SCR’s Kids and Teen Acting Program, who are chosen by audition after at least one year in the Theatre Conservatory.  This cast includes many experienced actors (some of them high school students who have been in the program since third grade) as well as a few students who never have performed onstage.  “Our older actors are there for the youngsters, always encouraging them,” Takakuwa said.  “Instilling confidence and self-esteem is what out program for kids is all about.”
