Press Release - Office Hour Underwriters

Office Hour Opens at SCR's, Underwritten by Tim and Marianne Kay

COSTA MESA, Calif. (April 15, 2016) - Julia Cho’s Office Hour had its world premiere on South Coast Repertory’s Julianne Argyros Stage tonight, directed by Neel Keller and underwritten by Tim and Marianne Kay.

In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson talked about Cho’s journey through SCR’s new play program, beginning in 2002, with her first commission, 99 Histories, which had a staged reading at the Pacific Playwrights Festival when she was still in grad school.  “Since then, her plays have been produced across the country, including two at SCR—The Piano Teacher and The Language Archive.  In those, as in all of Julia’s work, cultural influences have a large presence.  I believe you’ll find Office Hour to be her most powerful play so far.”

After acknowledging Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson in her curtain speech, Board President Sophie Cripe thanked the underwriters.

“The Kays have a long history with SCR, dating back to the late ’80s.  They’re First Nights subscribers on both stages, members of the Platinum Circle and Gala underwriters.  Tonight, I’m pleased to welcome Tim and Marianne to the ranks of Individual Honorary Producers—it’s a great group to be a part of.”

Managing Director Paula Tomei added that having generous underwriters is particularly important for new plays.  “We’re grateful that we have the luxury of working with writers like Julia, thanks in part to our Honorary Producers.”  Tomei also acknowledged two very special friends in the audience—George and Julianne Argyros.

She then thanked Media Partner the Orange County Register and invited everyone to the Cast Party on Ela’s Terrace.

Among the First Night subscribers and guests were Rose & Gary Guesman, Toni Tartamella, Jeff & Karla Elder, Lynne & Jerry Lang, Jennifer Williams, Susan Bowman, Jon Wilcox, Kathi &. Joe Coleman, Mike & Nancy Meyer and Michelle Rohe.
