Red Opens on SCR's Segerstrom Stage, Underwritten by Sophia Hall & Lawrence Arden Cripe and Jean and Tim Weiss
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2016) — John Logan’s Tony Award-winning Red opened the New Year on the Segerstrom Stage at South Coast Repertory’s, underwritten by two couples who are among the theatre’s most avid supporters, Sophie Hall & Lawrence Arden Cripe and Jean and Tim Weiss.
Directed by SCR Founding Artistic Director David Emmes, Red explores the nature of art and artists at a pivotal time in the life of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson talked about the artist, who was working feverishly on the largest commission in the history of modern art at the time the play is set, and the fictional character who is his assistant, created by Logan to represent the voice of a new generation.
“For the role of Rothko, David never considered anyone but Mark Harelik, an SCR favorite, who has imhabited other larger than life characters for us, including Cyrano and Tartuffe. And I think you’ll agree that David’s choice of Paul David Story as Rothko’s assistant was a brilliant one.”
Joining Masterson onstage, Board President Sophie Cripe acknowledged SCR’s Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson and introduced Managing Director Paula Tomei.
“We are thrilled to have two couples as Individual Honorary Producers,” Tomei said, “and what two couples they are! I have the honor of thanking these underwriters, one of whom is here with me onstage.”
Tomei touched on a few of the numerous ways in which the Cripes and Weisses have helped move SCR forward with major underwriting through the years. ”Of course, Sophie is our
current Board President, and Tim is an Honorary Trustee and member of the Presidents Circle. Both Sophie and Jean have been Gala Chairs. Jean and Tim have underwritten a record 17 plays, and Sophie and Larry helped underwrite our Pacific Playwrights Festival for four seasons and have been Honorary Producers of two other Segerstrom Stage productions. That’s just the beginning, and I encourage you to read all about them in tonight’s program.”
Cripe thanked Media Partner Orange County Business Journal, represented by Publisher Richard Reisman, and invited everyone to the Cast Party after the show, hosted by Room & Board at their South Coast Plaza store.
Among the First Night subscribers and guests were: Robert & Audrey Greenfield. Shiva Sattar, Tom Rogers & Sally Anderson, Betty & S L Huang, Deborah Sassoon & Daniel Gil, Leona Aronoff-Sadacca and Joe Sadacca, Brian Durkin & Tammy Ward and Mark & Bhadra Gordon.
