The Madwoman in the Volvo Premieres on SCR's Argyros Stage: Sandra Tsing Loh Comedy Underwritten by Steve and Laurie Duncan
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2016) — South Coast Repertory kicked off the New Year on the Julianne Argyros Stage with the world premiere of The Madwoman in the Volvo by Sandra Tsing Loh, directed by Lisa Peterson and underwritten in part by Steve and Laurie Duncan.
Based on her popular memoir, The Madwoman in the Volvo is Loh’s funny, fast-paced bumper car ride through midlife “madness” (and all it entails) with a side trip to the desert festival called “Burning Man.”
In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson reminded playgoers, “Most of you know Sandra as the popular NPR commentator, others as the stand-up comic and performance artist, and still others as the author of six hilarious books—and, adjunct professor at UCI. Now meet Sandra the playwright and actor, who—we’re happy to say, portrays herself in Madwoman. Caroline Aaron and Sharon Holt play all the other (fascinating) characters, and they’re directed by Lisa Peterson. We’ve had lots of fun at SCR in the company of these talented women. Tonight, I’m sure that you’ll enjoy the ride they’re taking us on.”
Joining Masterson onstage, Board President Sophie Cripe introduced SCR’s Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson and thanked the Duncans, whose underwriting generosity helped make the world premiere possible. “It’s my pleasure to work with Steve on SCR’s board, where he is vice president, advancement and chairs the long range planning committee. This is the third play that Steve and Laurie have helped produce, and they have been great supporters in many other ways. Please read all about them in your program.” Cripe also thanked the First Night subscribers and welcomed them and their guests to SCR’s first production of 2016.
Managing Director Paula Tomei thanked Media Partner, Orange County Register, and invited everyone to the Cast Party, co-sponsored by Seasons 52 at its South Coast Plaza restaurant.
Among the First Night subscribers and guests were Yvette and Kevin McCarthy, Linda and Tod White, Jene Witte, Natasha and Todd Palmaer, Karen and Bruce Clark, Ellen Shockro and Jack Shaw, Susan Bowman, Marilyn and Gary Baer, and Paul Leon.
