What Makes SCR’s Acting Classes for Kids and Teens So Special?

SCR offers a safe and welcoming environment for your child to build self-confidence, communication skills and creativity. The skills developed and explored in our classes give students the ability to become creative problem-solvers, inspired communicators and innovative thinkers. These skills help them improve their school work today, excel in the job market tomorrow, including possible careers in the arts, and move through life with success.

For health and safety, we follow the California Department of Public Health’s guidance for grades K-12. At this time, we do not require proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test, nor do we require masks. If you prefer to mask for classes, your choice will be respected. All our faculty and staff are vaccinated.

CLASS OPTIONS

For new students to the 2024-25 season, enrollment will open for any available spaces after 9 a.m. on Nov. 14. Returning students from Fall, you have priority through Nov. 13. Please enroll via the link that was emailed to you.

For students new to SCR

Students attend one day per week for 2 hours. SCR runs in a year format of Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions. New Students are accepted into Fall and Winter but Spring is for returning students from the previous sessions only in order to work on a final performance piece.

Kids Program 3-6 Grade

Year I students explore storytelling, movement, vocalization and character development with an emphasis on ensemble work.

Class Schedule:
3-4 Grade – Tuesdays 4-6 p.m.
3-4 Grade – Saturdays 9-11 a.m.
4-6 Grade – Wednesdays 4-6 p.m.
4-6 Grade – Thursdays 4-6 p.m.
5-6 Grade – Tuesdays 4-6 p.m.
5-6 Grade – Saturdays 9-11 a.m.
(for 6th graders, please see the list below for a 6-8th grade option on Saturday.)

Teen Program 7-12 Grade

In their first-year, students explore movement, vocalization, character development and ensemble building. Through workshop exercises, they begin to develop acting skills needed to create truthful characters and stories.

Class Schedule:
6-8 Grade – Saturdays 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
7-9 Grade – Wednesdays – 4-6 p.m.
7-8 Grade – Saturdays 9-11 a.m.
9-12 Grade – Saturdays 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.

For any and all students ages 14 – 18 years of age, no prior SCR history required.

Are you a teen who has thought about writing for the stage? Why not join us in playwriting this fall? In this brand new class, we’ll write, read and discuss all things playwriting. While learning about basic play structure, we’ll work together to find your unique voice. The end of the semester will culminate in sharing the work produced in class.  All levels welcome. Ages 14 and up.

Saturdays 9-11 a.m.

Kids Program 4-6 Grade

Second year students refine skills and grow individual confidence, range, and understanding of character and story.

Class Schedule:
4-6 Grade – Tuesdays 4-6 p.m.
4-6 Grade – Saturdays 9-11 a.m.

Teen Program 7-12 Grade

Second year students deepen their skills and delve more thoroughly into character development and script analysis, with emphasis on understanding acting objectives, exploring character relationships and building range.

At this time, both 7-9 Grade Year II classes are full. Please contact [email protected] to be added to a waitlist for a possible added class on Wednesday or Saturday.

7-10 Grade – Thursdays 4-6 p.m.
7-9 Grade – Saturdays 9-11 a.m. 
9-12 Grade – Saturdays 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. 

For students who have completed Year II and above.

Body, voice and imagination are the actor's tools. In Year III students use these tools to further develop their technique through advanced classes. You must have completed at least 2 sessions in Year II to be eligible for Year III and above.

5-12 Grade Ensembles

As serious students advance, they continue to explore characterization, emotional truth and availability, active pursuit of an objective and ensemble storytelling. This important class is for honing skills and taking greater risks.

5-7 Grade Ensemble – Saturdays 9-11 a.m.
7-8 Grade Ensemble – Saturdays 11:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
7-9 Grade Ensemble – Thursdays 4-6 p.m.
9-12 Grade Ensemble – Saturdays 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

8-12 Grade Improvisation and Sketch Comedy class

Explores working within an ensemble and “Writers Groups” to create narrative based sketches and improvised stories. The class will encourage each actor to explore truth in acting while cultivating their comedic voice. (8th grade students must have completed 3 years)

Saturdays 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.

8-12 Grade Year III Standard Musical Theatre Class

This exciting class prepares the actor for audition and performance. Students learn what it means to act a song and sing a scene, with an emphasis on music and text interpretation, healthy use of voice, selection of material and audition techniques. (7th Grade students are eligible but must have completed 3 years and audition, 8th grade students must have completed 3 years)

Saturdays 9 – 11 a.m.

9-12 Grade Advanced Musical Theatre

In this fast-paced class, Advanced Musical Theatre students deepen their skills and delve more thoroughly into the character development and script analysis of a song, with emphasis on using the music and text to create strong objectives. Each student participates in solo and ensemble material. Prerequisite: One year of musical theatre class and instructor approval.

Class Schedule:
Saturdays 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.

Players have all completed at least two years of training in our acting classes and range from fifth to twelfth grades. In order to be chosen as a Player, students must have strong recommendations from their SCR acting instructors and go through an audition and interview process. Students make a commitment to twice-weekly classes for the year and are held to the highest standards. These students will work toward putting on a fully staged show for two weekends of public performance, supported by professional directors, designers, stage crew and the SCR staff. An email will be sent in May to eligible students regarding audition dates.

JUNIOR PLAYERS - (for grades 5, 6, 7 & 8) The Junior Players will meet on Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. This program requires a full year commitment of 30 weeks, with extra rehearsal time before their public performances.

TEEN PLAYERS - (for grades 9, 10, 11 & 12) The Teen Players will meet on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 1:30–3:30 p.m. This program requires a full year commitment of 30 weeks, with extra rehearsal time before their public performances in May.
