Production Center Update—We’re Almost Back!
The props are already almost all back inside. The costumes are next, starting this week. And the best news of all—SCR’s Production Center has a new roof.
It has been a several-month project to repair the damage to SCR’s off-site facility caused by a late January rainstorm that collapsed the roof above the paint shop and caused water damage. The repairs and improvements should be complete by early September.
The upgraded facility will also soon have a new HVAC unit serving the costumes and props storage rooms, which haven’t had climate control before. That will help protect the costumes, some of which date back to the 1970s.
Other changes included adding a skylight above the paint studio, the largest room in the 18,000-square foot facility. This will give the scenic artists—who paint the sets you see on SCR’s stages—natural light to work with. At the same time, a skylight was removed from over the costume storage room to help protect the costumes from sun damage.
SCR’s Production Center is located about 2 ½ miles from the theatre. The facility houses not only the theatre’s paint shop, but also houses storage for upwards of 100,000 hanging costume garments and more than 10,000 props, including those for SCR’s annual production of A Christmas Carol.
The ability to reduce our carbon footprint by re-using our costumes, props and sets illustrate the importance of the Production Center to SCR and to you—our audiences. The theatre is still accepting donations for the added HVAC unit.
